Battle for Woodstock "Part 2" - Black Dahlia, Boksburg
The Second Battle for Woodstock was held on Sunday the 8th of July at Black Dahlia; a small club tucked away in the way, way east of the norm...Boksburg nog al; which is a standard venue for hosting bands of the heavy duty nature..... yes the HEAVY nature... Metal workers my darlin’s .. The ones who rock it out!!!
The bands in specific order were Burning Blue, Sticky Fingers, Tricks and Traps and Bringing a Shark to a Gun Fight and what a mix they were.
Burning Blue got off to a rocky start, no pun intended actually as the drumming was a tad off but thankfully panned out in the end. Their Kings of Leon song was executed well for a rehearsed cover song... pity their scores were marred due to lack of originality and cover overflow.
Whereas Sticky Fingers, who suffered from a terribly timed drummer whose odd beats threw me off hectically initially, but.... but.... they are not bad. Sad sounding instruments and terrible timing on everything...but.... I found them to be what I think Woodstock is about.... Soulful rock from kids who really want to tell the world their views in rhythm and rhyme...
Such untrained talent that will hopefully improve by the time this momentous event takes place as they have a real shot in my talent and diversity book. Fuck, I like their early rock sound.... It has been ages that I have felt the hair on the back of my neck stand on end for a band.... Ahhhh.. thanks guys.... I really like what you offered.... Main stage Finalist performers as far as I am concerned....
And then came Tricks and Traps.... Oh My God.... What a pair. Made duo of Krause Ehlers on Vocals, Keyboard and effects while his partner, brother and composer, Alexander in rhythmic crime, beat on the drums with passion and vigour . Fuck me two ways from Sunday, these chaps had it tight and hot.
Very dance and beat orientated and definitely a “filler” act far as I am concerned or even a place on the dj dance floor. Boil, their first song gripped me by my short an curly’s, laying the foundation for the aptly names second song...Carnival, pop song another hit then Smack (from prodigy) was out of this world and a very well executed cover that convinced me that this is NO filler act but an act all of its own that deserve their own platform and if I have anything to say about it I would to put them on the DJ Dance Floor for a small act, then on the MAIN stage after the last band on a Saturday Night. The biggest surprise was Dubhard the dubstep song where they recorded looping pieces on the spot (well done Alex) that is definitely radio worthy but felt out of place in a metal club, but be that as it may.... they were judged and scored fairly and on the same level.
...
And then you get Bring a shark to a Gunfight ............. screaming their lungs out on the sound check, (there I am waiting with abated breath, for his lungs to burst out of his mouth..... exactly what Black Dahlia is all about....
Never the hardness I have been attracted to, but can appreciate the musicality and the drummers extreme double kicker... He ain't Gavin who was the drummer of Warthane before they pissed off to some European snowy place, but an acceptable drummer enough. The only thing with the typical death/thrash/fuck up anything heavy metal music is the expected norms, like the dum da da dum da da dum de de de dum da da dum da da dum de de de, the fierce growling and fingers desperately trying to work the strings...
There they were, the guits all standing in a row, legs wide apart, bent at the knees, guitar in between their legs and their hands frantically working the organ while grinding to the music ... quite perverse in a freaky, sexual and melodic frenzied kind of way.
All in all, not a bad evening.
